Terrace Garden

The owners of the garden in Richmond, Virginia, desired an Italian garden, more specifically, a modern interpretation of the gardens of Tuscany. A Japanese garden was already in place; the landscape architects linked it to the new garden, composed of three terraces. The entrance to the middle terrace is through a bronze gate situated between two free-standing stone walls.

The gate's pattern is reminiscent of shoji screens. On the sides a trellis and an oblong water basin culminating in a sandstone wall define the middle terrace, paved in black slate. Two slate stairs lead to the upper terrace, a bocce field. Stucco walls, in which a bronze gate is also integrated, border the lawn. From the long cedar bench, which is mounted on the trellis's steel profiles, one can follow the progress of the game, or simply enjoy the garden's herbaceous perennials.

A path in the back part of the garden, shaded by hornbeam, leads to the lowest of the three terraces, the „secret garden“. A bosket of Canadian serviceberry, inspired by Mediterranean olive groves, is situated in a bed of gravel. Two basalt steps in the water basin connect the bosket back to the entrance terrace.
